DIRECTOR OF GRANTS & DEVELOPMENT

Based in Washington, DC

The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) has engaged us to find a skilled Development professional to lead their Development programs. SfN is a non-profit, professional association representing over 40,000 members working in the dynamic and multi-disciplinary field of science dealing with the brain and nervous system. The staff of 70 plus professionals is a highly dedicated group, passionate about and proud of supporting the scientific research, advocacy and public education activities their members are engaged in. They foster a culture of creativity, initiative-taking and excellence, and seek highly motivated, bright, inquisitive, and energetic team players interested in contributing to the multi-faceted mission of the Society.This position reports to the Senior Director, Finance and Development/CFO.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Grants and Development will identify and oversee the SfN’s Government grants programs and pro-actively seek new agencies and sources of public and private funds. They will be responsible for facilitating connections between these officers and program staff with the appropriate content knowledge. The Director will supervise a growing Corporate / Foundation giving program and as well as an Annual Fund. This individual will supervise one Development Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Cultivation
·         Monitor federal, state and local web sites and other sources for RFP announcements and inform program staff of relevant RFPs.
·         Identify and research availability of public and private funds, in response to program needs, as anticipated by program staff.
·         Manage and expand the Corporate / Foundation programs as well as a modest Annual Fund.
·         Continue the recent implementation of a Planned Giving program.
·         Represent the Society to prospective funders and donors.
·         Develop letters, agreements and other materials, as needed for Executive Director and others presenting SfN programs.
·         Design and coordinate follow-up contact to possible funders and sponsors after contact has been made by senior staff, Council members, etc.
·         Ensure donor stewardship is maintained, including sending acknowledgment letters, press releases, photos, annual reports and other correspondence.
·         Creation, updating and dissemination of various types of materials regarding development initiatives, including brochures, website content, correspondence, etc.
 
Proposal Development
·         Coordinate all RFP application, sponsorship and other funding proposal activities, including planning, writing, document gathering, internal and external communications and final submissions.
·         Serve as collaborating writer and editor for all RFP applications and grant proposals, working with relevant program staff.
·         Work with finance staff and relevant program staff to develop accurate budget information for all RFP applications and grant proposals.
·         Ensure all applications are responsive to the RFP or grant requirements and that both the content and format are compliant with the funders’ requirements; ensure that the correct forms are utilized for all necessary attachments.
·         Oversee final production, ensuring relevant attachments are included; oversee mailing and/or electronic submission of applications and proposals.
 
Reporting Requirements
·         Communicate with grant/contract points of contact, in conjunction with Project Director/Program Staff, as appropriate.
·         Coordinate with relevant departments to ensure timely submission and that all aspects of interim and final reports to funding agencies, entities and sponsors, as required by the funding agreements, are complete.
·         Develop a list of funding requirements that impact grant compliance (e.g., assuring reasonable efforts on minority owned/small business concerns and other requirements that could impact competitive standing, if not met) and ensure requirements are being met.
·         Coordinate with appropriate program staff to ensure all requirements are met and documented.
·         Ensure all contracts and grant files are updated and accurate.

Tracking
 
·         Ensure multi-year funding and sponsorship agreements are up-to-date; coordinate with Finance to ensure applicable payments are up to date.
·         Ensure that funded programs are responsive to the overall mission of SfN and do not conflict or compete with member activities.
·         Develop, monitor and report on Goals and Budget for the Grants & Development Department, including grant and sponsor related revenues.
·         Follow-up on submitted applications and proposals, as well as with potential funders.

QUALIFICATIONS
Strong organizational and computer skills (MS Office) are required; keen attention to detail is a necessity. The ability to manage multiple tasks with various deadlines and the ability to prioritize are essential. Requires outstanding interpersonal and diplomatic skills, strong analytical and quantitative abilities, and excellent written and oral communications skills. Must work well under pressure and be willing to work additional hours during critical times. Candidate must be a self-starter and an independent thinker with creative abilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of government application processes and award management, as well as familiarity with federal grant writing and experience with grant proposals, is required. Knowledge of federal government funding streams and cycles is a plus and experience with proposal writing and securing private funding is preferred. Experience managing budgets is also highly desirable. Will possess the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 5 years of documented development experience/accomplishments focusing on identification and attraction of public and/or private funds. Some knowledge of Planned Giving is needed. Supervisory experience required. 

Communication Skills
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to effectively analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must be able to effectively write reports and business correspondence. Must possess the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members, donors, business partners and other employees of the organization.

EVERY CHAPTER CHALLENGE!!!!!!!!! - Monday, August 17, 2009

 

We urge you to spread the word within your membership about the AAGP Foundation Every Chapter Challenge. The challenge started July 22nd and will end October 15, 2009. The AAGP Chapter that raises the most money will be recognized as a 2009 Star Chapter for their efforts. The Star Chapter will be featured in the AAGP e-Newsletter, on our website and at the national AAGP Conference in Austin, Texas.  Attached is the 2009 Every Chapter Challenge Fundraising Handbook for your review and use.
 
Those Chapters that raise $250 or more will be members of the AAGP Foundation’s Shooting Star Club, and will enjoy the exclusive perks of being a Challenge leader, including an invitation to a reception held during the AAGP Conference.

 Meeting 3/25/09

Invited everyone for an open forum on how they were coping with the new economic realities of 2009. We had some great discussions on strategies for adjusting for increased needs for services; how and who is using stimulus funds; what the remainder of 2009 is shaping up to be; and an exchange of information to find out more on federal/state/local government funding.

Roundtable discussion with 2 wonderful facilitators, Teri Blandon, Director, Foundation & Government Development, WETA TV/FM and Beth Ann Fromm, Director of Grants, Providence Health Foundation. Teri will be a presenter at the AAGP conference in November while Beth and Jesse Buggs both just participated in the AHP Midatlantic Region Conference in Richmond. Our discussion topic – Grant Professionals’ Challenges and Opportunities in These Troubled Economic Times.
